No Birthday Cake for America Until We Reckon With Our Past!

America doesn’t deserve a birthday celebration.

Sorry, not sorry.

I wrestled with this post. At first, I wanted to point out the positives & negatives of our country. That maybe, somehow, we have some atonement. Then this 💩💩💩 popped up on all the media streams

I just can’t celebrate a country, be it America, or any other country, that looks at others as subhuman.

To get to the point: I as a black man will not celebrate America because:

  • The Supreme Court voted in a 6-3 majority to gut parts of the Voting Rights Act )(Louisiana v. Callais) race can no longer be a means that race can no longer be used as a means to draw congressional districts to give marginalized folks a voice. Yet, the courts conveniently overlook gerrymandering.
  • We had a hate rally in the middle of Washington DC today, & there was silence and complacency. The president of this country said not one word. Just like his father & fore fathers that chose silence when folks were lynched or denied human rights, he too chose the coward racist path of silence.

Don’t Forget Renee & Alex!

It has been six months since the state-sanctioned murders of Renee Good & Alex Preti. Their murderers have not been brought to justice. The families & partners of those souls have not found peace.

I’ve watched my neighbors get rounded up & sent to detention camps.

Where Do We Go From Here?

Education & collective activism will save us.

  • We cant pretend this country is a beacon of freedom when we watch others have their dignity stripped away by those in power.
  • Advocating for others is a collective struggle. Period.
  • Things will not change until we (Americans) stop running from our past. This country was founded on only a select few benefiting from it. This history must be taught in order for future generations to create a better America for all.
